How light level 0 spawning works since the 1.18 update, and a lighting plan for the base interior and the paths outside.
The spawn rule is one condition: since the 1.18 update, hostile mobs spawn only where the block light level is 0. There is no distance exception and no cover bonus — a dark block under a roof is exactly as spawnable as an open field at night.
Light level is measured per block. A torch emits level 14, and light falls by one level per block of distance, so the block beside the torch reads 13, two blocks away reads 12, and so on. Any surface reading 1 or higher is safe; only the spots that read 0 need attention.
On narrow screens, swipe or scroll the plate sideways.
Inside the base, place a torch on each wall segment so no corner falls to light 0. Re-check after building the roof: a roof removes sky light, and a room that was bright at noon can read 0 the moment the ceiling closes.
Outside, extend the same rule to the ground. Light the path in front of the door with torches spaced so no path block reaches 0 after dusk — otherwise the approach becomes a spawn point even though the interior is safe.
For a 7×7 room, four wall torches at mid-wall and one on each end wall normally keep every block above 0; for 9×9, add a torch to each long wall. The exact count depends on furniture placement, so walk the room and check the corners last.
