Where to get wood, stone, bricks and concrete-like blocks, their blast resistance, and what each is typically used for in a first house.
Wood is the fastest route to a finished wall. Overworld wood types include oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry and bamboo — nine options, all cut with a wooden axe in the first hour of play. Wood gives a warm look and low blast resistance, which is fine for a first house away from exposed corners.
Stone raises protection without much extra effort. Cobblestone has a blast resistance of 6 and is produced simply by digging the foundation, so the floor layer costs no extra trip. Stone, smelted from cobblestone, gives a smooth interior finish at the same resistance class.

Obsidian is the protective material: it resists blasts at 1,200, which is why it is used for protective builds around bases and portals. Gathering it takes lava and water and more time than a first session usually allows, so reserve it for the most exposed spots after the starter house is done.
Bricks and concrete-like blocks are decorative upgrades. They sit above the cobblestone class in resistance and change the look of a build, but they are not needed for the first house — wood and cobblestone answer the same job faster.
